Megalopolis: City of Collectibles
When it comes to tragic characters, it’s kind of tough to beat Anakin Skywalker. Just take a look at the history:
First mentioned (not by name or anything, but whatever) in the original Star Wars: A New Hope, Anakin is described by Obi Wan Kenobi as “the best star pilot in the Galaxy, and a cunning warrior.” Obi Wan then adds “And he was a good friend.” Granted, Kenobi may have been going senile at the time, because once we actually got to meet Anakin with the arrival of the Star Wars prequels, we saw that his great piloting skills could be summed up with the phrase “Let’s try spinning; that’s a good trick,” and that friendship that Obi Wan got so nostalgic for involved a lot more angsty crying than one would expect.
But whatever the case, by the time of Return of the Jedi where we finally catch our first glimpse of the man behind the Darth Vader mask, it’s revealed just how broken this once-great warrior has become. Sure, as a Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Vader may have inspired fear throughout the Empire, but trapped inside was a crippled old man who’d been sweating it out in a pleather body sock for twenty years. And then he up and dies.
Anakin’s journey across six movies — from optimistic slave/race-car driver, to emotionally imbalanced (occasionally genocidal) hero of the Clone Wars, to badass evil telekinetic cyborg, and finally to not-as badass redeemed telekinetic cyborg who then dies and comes back as a ghost — demonstrates the slippery slope of revenge, and how even the most promising individuals can fall from grace. It also proves once and for all that even if your entire lightsaber fight has involved nothing but the most insane acrobatics, once you lose the high ground it really is over (how’s that for Star Wars: Explained?).
Of course, Skywalker revenge morality play aside, Anakin still had some pretty good times. He got to make a lightsaber. He got to hook up with Padme (and Padme looks a lot like Natalie Portman, so that’s a plus). He got to strangle an obnoxious coworker in the middle of a meeting. Who among us hasn’t wanted to do that? These are times worth remembering.
Now, you can celebrate the good times and the bad, with everything from Anakin to Darth Vader toy options from Megalopolis.
Relive the glory days with the Pop! Star Wars: Clone Wars Anakin Skywalker figure. This figure showcases Anakin in his prime, complete with Jedi tunic, blue lightsaber, and oversized bobble head (which was left out of the original Clone Wars character design for some reason). Partner him with Pop! versions of Ahsoka, Yoda, and Obi Wan Kenobi for the ultimate Pop! Clone Wars collection.
If pre lava-burn Anakin toys aren’t your thing, then how about something a bit more iconic? With Padme out of the picture, Darth Vader, in all of his glory, can be yours. Megalopolis has detailed, posable Darth Vader action figures from Figuarts, Kaiyodo, and Star Wars: The Black Series. But that’s only the beginning.
In the climactic final confrontation in Return of the Jedi, Darth Vader turns on his Sith master to protect the life of his son (30-year-old spoiler warning?), and in the process absorbs just a ridiculous amount of force lightning. The evil energies surge through his broken body, illuminating his skeleton from the inside (because of science), but they’re not enough to keep Vader from chucking the Emperor down a reactor shaft. Memorialize Anakin Skywalker’s revenge against the man who took everything from him, with the Darth Vader Emperor’s Wrath mini bust. Hand cast in partially translucent resin and with built-in lighting effects, this statue shows how even when maimed and electrocuted, Vader is still a force to be reckoned with.
Finally, if displaying Darth Vader isn’t enough for you, why not become him? The Star Wars: The Black Series Darth Vader Electronic Wearable Helmet comes in multiple, movie-authentic pieces, and features built in sound effects (so you won’t have to strap yourself into an iron lung to mimic Vader’s breathing). This mask is a must have for any Star Wars cosplayer, and will give your collection just the right touch of Dark Side menace.
As the first six movies of Star Wars explained, evil leads only to tragedy. On the other hand, at least when it comes to Darth Vader, evil also looks pretty freaking cool. Take a walk on the Dark Side. With Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader toys from Megalopolis, your collection is guaranteed to be impressive… most impressive.
